Chamberlain's line

What it is

Chamberlain's line is a craniometric reference line used in evaluating the craniocervical junction. It is drawn from the back of the hard palate to the posterior edge of the foramen magnum (the opisthion), and it helps assess for basilar invagination.

Understanding Chamberlain's line

To evaluate whether the odontoid process has migrated abnormally upward into the skull base (basilar invagination), radiologists use reference lines such as Chamberlain's line. If the tip of the odontoid extends above Chamberlain's line by more than a defined amount, it suggests basilar invagination. This is relevant in Chiari because basilar invagination is one of the bony abnormalities that can accompany the condition (particularly complex Chiari) and can change management. Chamberlain's line is one of several craniometric measurements (along with McGregor's line and others) used to assess craniocervical alignment.
