What it is

Scoliosis management includes the approaches used to address spinal curvature — monitoring, bracing, or surgery — depending on the severity and progression. In children with Chiari-associated scoliosis (often related to a syrinx), scoliosis management is sometimes needed alongside treating the Chiari.

When scoliosis is associated with a Chiari-related syrinx, treating the Chiari and syrinx (with decompression) can sometimes halt or improve the curve, especially if caught early. However, scoliosis may still progress or require its own treatment. Scoliosis management is guided by the degree of curvature and whether it is worsening: mild curves may be monitored, moderate curves may be treated with bracing to slow progression (particularly in growing children), and severe or progressive curves may require surgery (spinal fusion) to correct and stabilize the spine.
