Gliosarcoma

What it is

Gliosarcoma is a variant of glioblastoma that contains two components: a glioma part and a sarcoma-like part (resembling connective-tissue tumors). It is a grade 4, IDH-wildtype tumor, considered a subtype of glioblastoma and treated similarly.

Understanding Gliosarcoma

Under the microscope, gliosarcoma shows a distinctive mix of glioma cells and spindle-shaped, sarcoma-like cells. Despite this unusual two-part appearance, it behaves like glioblastoma and is classified as a glioblastoma variant. It typically occurs in adults and may have a tendency to occur in certain locations. Treatment follows the same general approach as glioblastoma — surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy — and the outlook is similar to glioblastoma overall. Recognizing gliosarcoma as a glioblastoma variant ensures it is treated appropriately. Its distinctive appearance is mainly of diagnostic interest, as it does not change the fundamental approach.
