What it is

The KIAA1549::BRAF fusion is a gene rearrangement in which the KIAA1549 and BRAF genes are joined together, activating the MAPK growth-signaling pathway. This fusion drives the majority of pilocytic astrocytomas (a common, often curable childhood glioma) and predicts a favorable outcome.

While BRAF V600E is a point mutation, the KIAA1549::BRAF fusion is a different way of activating BRAF — by fusing it to another gene, which switches it on. About 90% of pilocytic astrocytomas carry this fusion, making it a hallmark of these tumors.
