Tumor treating fields (Optune)

What it is

Tumor treating fields (a device known as Optune) use low-intensity electrical fields, delivered through patches worn on the scalp, to interfere with the division of glioblastoma cells and slow tumor growth. They are added to standard treatment for glioblastoma.

This is a distinctive treatment that uses physics rather than drugs. Patches placed on the scalp deliver alternating electrical fields to the area of the tumor; these fields disrupt processes needed for tumor cells to divide, slowing their growth. For glioblastoma, tumor treating fields are used together with standard treatment (added during and after the maintenance temozolomide phase), and studies showed that adding them extended survival compared with standard treatment alone. To be effective, the device must be worn for a large portion of each day (many hours), which requires commitment and adjustment to daily life; the patches are worn on a shaved scalp and connected to a portable device. Side effects are generally limited (often skin irritation under the patches). Tumor treating fields represent an additional option that can be incorporated into glioblastoma care.
