Understanding Differential pressure valve

This valve is set to open at a particular pressure difference — available in options often described as low, medium, or high pressure — to control drainage. When the pressure on the inlet side (from the ventricle) exceeds the outlet side by the set amount, the valve opens and CSF flows. A limitation is that a simple differential pressure valve does not, on its own, account for the effects of body position (such as the siphoning that occurs when upright), which can contribute to overdrainage; this is why some shunts add antisiphon or gravitational features. The choice of valve type and setting is individualized to balance adequate drainage against overdrainage.
