Intracranial pressure (ICP)

Because the skull is a rigid, closed container, the volumes of brain tissue, blood, and CSF must stay in balance to keep pressure normal — a principle called the Monro-Kellie doctrine. In adults, normal ICP lying down is roughly 7 to 15 mmHg. When CSF accumulates in hydrocephalus, ICP can rise, producing symptoms such as headache, vomiting, and decreased alertness, and (in infants, whose skulls can still expand) a bulging fontanelle and increasing head size.
