Slit ventricle syndrome

What it is

Slit ventricle syndrome is a condition, usually in people who have had a shunt for a long time, characterized by very small ("slit-like") ventricles and intermittent symptoms (such as headaches), thought to relate to the ventricles becoming small and stiff, often from long-term overdrainage.

Understanding Slit ventricle syndrome

With long-standing overdrainage, the ventricles can become very small and lose their normal ability to buffer pressure changes, so that even small problems with shunt flow cause intermittent symptoms. People may have episodes of headache (sometimes severe) that come and go, and the small ventricles can make some aspects of shunt management more difficult (for example, the ventricular catheter can be harder to place or more prone to intermittent obstruction). Management is individualized and may include adjusting the valve, adding antisiphon features, or other measures; the goal is to relieve symptoms while balancing drainage. Slit ventricle syndrome is one of the more challenging long-term shunt complications and is managed by the care team based on the specific situation.
