Hydrocephalus is a chronic condition to manage, not a one-time fix. It can change over time, and treatments like shunts can need adjustment or revision. Even children treated with an ETV need ongoing follow-up. That's why long-term monitoring is a standard part of care.
What monitoring involves
Follow-up typically includes tracking head circumference (especially in babies), checking the soft spot when applicable, watching development, and using imaging when needed to assess the ventricles and any device. Your neurosurgery team sets the schedule based on your child's situation. Keeping these appointments is one of the most important things you can do.
Shunt care over the years
A shunt is highly effective but is a device that can malfunction or become infected over time, sometimes requiring revision surgery. Because a shunt problem can develop at any point, parents become familiar with the warning signs and keep their neurosurgery team's contact information handy throughout childhood.
Warning signs of a shunt or pressure problem
Learn your child's specific warning signs from your team. Commonly, signs of a shunt malfunction or rising pressure can include: vomiting, unusual sleepiness or irritability, headache (in older children), a bulging soft spot, rapid head growth, fever, or redness along the shunt tract. Report these promptly — shunt problems need timely evaluation.
