Syringobulbia

What it is

Syringobulbia is the extension of a syrinx upward into the brainstem — specifically the medulla oblongata. It is a less common but more serious development than a syrinx confined to the spinal cord (syringomyelia).

Understanding Syringobulbia

When a syrinx extends into the medulla, it can affect the structures and cranial nerve nuclei located there, potentially causing symptoms such as facial sensory changes, difficulty swallowing, speech changes, vocal cord problems, and other brainstem-related signs. Syringobulbia can occur in association with Chiari malformation and syringomyelia, representing an upward extension of the fluid cavity. Because it involves the brainstem, syringobulbia is a more serious finding that requires careful evaluation and management, often with attention to relieving the underlying CSF obstruction. It is less common than syringomyelia confined to the cord. Understanding syringobulbia clarifies a more serious extension of the syrinx into the brainstem and its potential effects.
