Gray matter

What it is

Gray matter is the part of the brain rich in nerve cell bodies (neurons) and their connections, where much of the brain's processing takes place. It includes the outer layer of the brain (the cortex) and certain deep structures. Gliomas can arise in or involve gray matter.

Understanding Gray matter

Gray matter contains the cell bodies of neurons, in contrast to white matter, which contains their connecting fibers. The cerebral cortex (the brain's outer gray matter) handles functions such as movement, sensation, language, and thought, and deep gray matter structures have their own roles. Gliomas can involve gray matter, and their location relative to functionally important gray matter areas (such as those for movement or language) strongly influences symptoms and the surgical approach. Diffuse gliomas often involve both gray and white matter as they infiltrate.
