What it is

Recurrence is the return or regrowth of a glioma after treatment — whether after a period of control or near the original site. It is common in diffuse gliomas, which infiltrate the brain and are difficult to eliminate completely, and it prompts consideration of further treatment.

Because diffuse gliomas spread microscopically beyond what can be removed or treated, they frequently recur even after initial treatment that appeared successful. Recurrence is usually detected on surveillance imaging or through returning symptoms.
