What it is
CSF production is the ongoing creation of cerebrospinal fluid, occurring mainly in the choroid plexus of the ventricles. The body produces roughly 500 mL of CSF per day in a continuous process.
Understanding CSF production
The choroid plexus generates the majority of CSF, with smaller contributions from the ependyma and blood vessels. Production continues steadily regardless of how much fluid is already present, which is why a blockage or absorption problem causes fluid to accumulate — production does not simply stop. Because production is continuous, one treatment strategy in certain situations is to reduce it, for example through choroid plexus cauterization (often combined with ETV in infants). Overproduction of CSF is a rare cause of hydrocephalus, seen mainly with choroid plexus tumors.
