Distal catheter obstruction

What it is

Distal catheter obstruction is a blockage of the distal catheter — the tubing that carries CSF from the valve to its destination (such as the abdomen). It is a recognized cause of shunt malfunction, though less common than proximal catheter obstruction.

Understanding Distal catheter obstruction

The distal catheter can become obstructed at its tip or along its length — for example, by debris, scarring, or a fluid pocket forming around the tip in the abdomen (an abdominal pseudocyst). When the distal catheter is blocked, CSF cannot drain to its destination, causing a malfunction. Distal obstruction is generally less common than proximal (ventricular) catheter obstruction but is still an important cause of shunt failure. It is diagnosed through evaluation and imaging and treated with a shunt revision to clear or replace the distal component, sometimes along with addressing a pseudocyst if present. Understanding distal obstruction completes the picture of where shunts can become blocked.
