What microcephaly is
Microcephaly means the head (and usually the brain) is smaller than expected for a baby's age and sex. It's measured by head circumference. A small head can reflect a smaller or differently formed brain, which is why it's taken seriously.
Why it can occur with encephalocele
Encephalocele can be associated with several brain differences, and microcephaly is one of the findings sometimes seen alongside it. In some cases, a portion of the brain has herniated into the sac; in others, the brain inside the skull is itself smaller or differently formed. Microcephaly can also be a feature of certain genetic syndromes that include encephalocele.
Why it matters for outlook
When microcephaly accompanies an encephalocele, it generally signals a more complex situation and can be associated with a more guarded developmental outlook, because head/brain size relates to brain development. However, the full picture depends on why the head is small and how the brain has formed — which is why imaging and sometimes genetic evaluation are important.
What evaluation looks like
- Head circumference measurement and tracking over time
- MRI to assess how the brain has formed inside the skull
- Evaluation for associated syndromes, possibly including genetic testing
- Developmental follow-up to monitor milestones and arrange early support if needed
Holding hope and realism together
A diagnosis of microcephaly with encephalocele is serious, but it doesn't erase the value of careful evaluation and supportive care. Early intervention services, therapies, and close follow-up help every child reach their potential, whatever the outlook.
