You will hear the phrase "neural tube defect" a lot. Encephalocele is one member of that family. Understanding the others helps you place your child's diagnosis in context.

The neural tube defect family

Neural tube defects all share the same origin — incomplete closure of the neural tube — but they differ by where along the tube the problem occurs and what is affected.

The main types include:

  • Spina bifida — the most common; affects the lower part of the tube (the spine). In its open form (myelomeningocele), the spinal cord and nerves protrude.
  • Anencephaly — a severe defect at the very top of the tube, where the brain and skull do not form properly. It is not compatible with long-term survival.
  • Encephalocele — affects the skull/brain region: a skull opening through which brain coverings and sometimes brain tissue protrude.

Encephalocele makes up roughly 10–20% of cranial neural tube defects.

How encephalocele differs from spina bifida

  • Location: Encephalocele is in the skull; spina bifida is in the spine.
  • What protrudes: Encephalocele can contain brain coverings and brain tissue; spina bifida can contain spinal cord and nerves.
  • Typical effects: Spina bifida often affects movement and bladder/bowel control of the lower body; encephalocele's effects depend heavily on brain involvement and location.

How encephalocele differs from anencephaly

Anencephaly involves a profound failure of brain and skull formation and a very different (uniformly fatal) outlook. Encephalocele, by contrast, ranges widely — from small, mild defects with excellent outcomes to severe ones. The two should not be equated.

Why the comparison matters for your family

Families sometimes find frightening information about anencephaly or severe spina bifida and assume it applies to them. It usually does not. Encephalocele is its own condition with its own spectrum, and your child's specific type, contents, and imaging matter far more than the general category.

Questions people ask

Is encephalocele worse than spina bifida??

Neither is universally "worse" — both range widely. It depends on the individual case. Can a baby have more than one neural tube defect? Rarely, yes; this is part of why imaging is thorough. Does the same folic acid advice apply? Folic acid is recommended to prevent neural tube defects generally; its strongest evidence is for spina bifida and anencephaly.
