Achondroplasia

What it is

Achondroplasia is a genetic condition affecting bone growth and the most common form of short-limbed dwarfism. It affects the skull base as well as the limbs, and it can be associated with a small foramen magnum and crowding at the craniocervical junction.

Understanding Achondroplasia

In achondroplasia, altered growth of the bones at the skull base can result in a narrowed foramen magnum, which can crowd or compress the lower brainstem and upper spinal cord at the craniocervical junction — producing effects that overlap with Chiari malformation. This narrowing is a recognized concern in young children with achondroplasia and can, in some cases, cause serious problems (such as breathing difficulties or spinal cord compression). Affected children are monitored for craniocervical narrowing, and surgery to decompress the foramen magnum is performed when significant compression occurs. While distinct from typical Chiari I, the craniocervical crowding in achondroplasia is a related concern.
