What it is

Hydrocephalus is a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain's ventricles, often raising pressure. It can be associated with Chiari malformation — most commonly type II — and its presence influences how Chiari is managed.

Hydrocephalus and Chiari are linked in several ways. In Chiari type II (associated with spina bifida), hydrocephalus is very common and is a central part of management. When hydrocephalus and Chiari coexist, treating the hydrocephalus (for example, with a shunt or endoscopic third ventriculostomy) is often addressed first or alongside the Chiari, since relieving the raised pressure can improve symptoms and is important for the success of any Chiari surgery.
