CSF homeostasis (steady state)

What it is

CSF homeostasis is the stable, balanced state in which the production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid are matched, keeping the total volume and intracranial pressure within normal limits. It is the steady state the system normally maintains.

Understanding CSF homeostasis (steady state)

Under normal conditions, the roughly 500 mL of CSF produced each day is balanced by an equal amount absorbed, so the total volume (about 150 mL) and the pressure stay stable. Hydrocephalus represents a breakdown of this homeostasis — whether from a blockage in flow, impaired absorption, or rarely overproduction — causing fluid to accumulate and pressure to rise. Treatments such as a shunt or ETV aim to restore a functional balance by providing a new route for CSF to drain or be absorbed, re-establishing a stable state.

Why it matters

Understanding CSF homeostasis helps families see hydrocephalus as a breakdown of a normally stable balance, and treatment as a way of restoring that balance so volume and pressure return toward normal.
